A world-famous, high octane
sailing race will begin its
40,000-mile globetrotting route
on the tidal Thames.
Vessels set for the 10th Clipper Round the World Yacht race will launch from historic St Katharine Docks on 30th August.
Although the river will be open as usual, Port of London Authority
staff will manage traffic around
Tower Bridge, to help make
sure the race start goes off
without a hitch.

Competitors will then make their
way to the Tower Bridge area of
the river. After the race start, the
70-foot yachts will set off from Southend on 31st August for the
first leg of the race: London to
Rio De Janeiro.

Ryan Hall, PLA deputy harbour master (upper) said: “It’s an
honour for PLA staff to be playing

a role at one of the world’s
biggest sporting events.
Tower Bridge will be an
excellent setting for the
opening ceremony and I’m
sure everyone who works,
lives near or uses the Thames
is looking forward to this
sailing spectacle.”

Divided into eight legs and
16 individual races, the 12
identical yachts and their
crews face a bewildering set
of weather, wind and sailing conditions. From fickle wind
holes to sudden squalls, the competitors (many of whom
are amateur sailors) will have their abilities tested to the full.
It’s thought that the race will
be watched by a global
television audience of more
than 250 million. The race route takes in 16 cities across six continents, with legs of the

race taking crews into some of the most iconic ports throughout the world.
